ALPHA ET OMEGA (AO)
An occult magical order established in England in the early years of the 20th Century. After the effective collapse of
Golden Dawn (a.k.a. Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn) in 1903, some of its members, under the leadership of J W Brodie-Innes and Moina Mathers, the wife of S. L. MacGregor-Mathers, attempted to preserve the original concepts of the Outer Order while changing its name to Alpha et Omega.
The effective demise of AO, together with the other significant splinter organization, the magically orientated Stella Matutina, came when Francis Israel Regardie published the rituals and teachings of Golden Dawn.
The AO regalia and other items were buried in the garden of a house on the south coast where they remained until the adjacent cliff collapsed in
1966. They were discovered on the beach below and were subsequently photographed to appear in an edition of the Daily Telegraph where they were described as having probably belonged to a witch.
PLEASE NOTE:
One of the major problems with 'defining' Paganism and/or its beliefs and practices is that it is an 'organic' movement, in that it is undergoing constant change and re-evaluation from within, and as such any 'one-size-fits-all' approach to understanding Paganism will be found wanting.
Due to the very 'organic' nature of Paganism, and the many differing Paths and Traditions within it, in many cases no one defintion may be universally accepted by all Pagans. Therefore, where such cases of possible conflicting and/or contradictory meanings of certain terms occur I have endevoured to give not only the generally accepted meaning, but also any major 'variations' in belief and/or practice.
Christians who believe this difference in meaning of certain key terms, beliefs and practices to be unique to Paganism need to remember that such conflicts also arise within the Body of Christ - the Church. Take for instance the differring practices amongst Christians concerning Baptism and the different attitudes towards women in the clergy.
